QA4 Surgery System Case Study Partners

Case Study - Amsterdam Chooses the QA4

Background

The Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) is located in Amsterdam and is the leading hospital and research institute specialised in cancer in the Netherlands. The mission of the AVL is: "a cure for every cancer and excellent care for every patient."

Since 1914, the AVL has been a leading hospital and research institute focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research of cancer. Alongside the UMC Groningen (Comprehensive Cancer Center) and the Maastricht UMC+ Oncology Center, the AVL has received the prestigious OECI accreditation.

The OECI is the Organization of European Cancer Institutes and reviews this accreditation every five years. This means that the AVL meets high, internationally established quality standards and must continue to meet them.

State-Of-The-Art Cancer Services Combined with a Rich Medical History

The hospital is named after Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), who is considered the founder of microbiology, known for his groundbreaking discoveries with self-built lenses for microscopes.

His contributions to microbiology have been invaluable. Van Leeuwenhoek's work was recognised by the Royal Society in London, with which he corresponded.

The AVL has 212 beds, 50 of which are for day treatment, 9 operating rooms, and 12 radiotherapy machines. In 2024, 43,650 patients were treated and there were 118,236 outpatient visits. This was accomplished with 3,426 employees.

The Research and Treatment Center (OBC) is a unique department within the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, where patients can come for endoscopic examination and treatment for the specialities of gastroenterology, urology, pulmonology and gynaecology. This department has 4 treatment rooms.

At the OBC, traditional operating tables were used. When these needed to be replaced, there was a need to use a somewhat more flexible solution. That is, more manoeuvrable, but also compact - and above all, safe. Heijneman Medical, a distributor of medical devices and preferred supplier of Anetic Aid, was invited in 2024 to provide a mobile surgical system on a trial basis. This gave both the user and other internal stakeholders the opportunity to assess whether the Anetic Aid QA4 could be a suitable solution.

After this trial period with the QA4 Mobile Surgery System, there was great enthusiasm regarding the wide range of operations that could be performed with the QA4 and the ease with which the trolley could be positioned correctly.

The manoeuvrability and agility were also received very positively, particularly the fact that the QA4 could be moved ergonomically thanks to its 5th wheel steering.

All adjustments - high/low, Trendelenburg/Reverse Trendelenburg, longitudinal shift, lateral tilt, and back adjustment - are utilised. The same applies to X-ray transmittance and the use of the C-arm.

The Purchasing Manager was positively surprised by the price-quality ratio. Ultimately, three QA4 trolleys have been purchased for now, including pelvic extension plates and armrests.
