Prone positioning benefits for Covid-19 patients

Medical teams across the world are continuing to analyse techniques and practices to support Covid-19 patients – particularly those that facilitate breathing without the need for mechanical ventilation.

Evidence is constantly being updated, but in January this year, the World Health Organization made a conditional recommendation that awake, severely ill patients with COVID-19 requiring supplemental oxygen or non-invasive ventilation would benefit from prone positioning. *

A new positioning device offered by clinical equipment specialist Anetic Aid is specifically designed for this to address this – relieving pressure on the diaphragm to encourage respiratory function.  Part of the Trulife Elite range, its construction is light weight pressure relieving foam and it was developed for patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) - a type of respiratory failure characterised by the rapid onset of widespread inflammation of the lungs.

Conforming to the body shape of a patient in the prone position, it comes in a combination of shapes which can be configured separately to accommodate patients whatever their physique. It also creates airflow around the patient’s body.

As well as its application in ICU, it can also be used during surgery, where its combination of re-usable chest, stomach, hip and shin positioner pads and single-use supports for the head, offer cost effectiveness combined with infection control.
